Great, it worked!! We are out cutting greens right now, and it's not too bad. The greens are soaked but we are getting a decent cut. We've double cut them today so they'll be rolling good. See you when you get here!!
Hello from the golf course. I just set up to send blogs from my iPhone. This should mean fewer gaps btween posts.

For the benefit of Ms. White

A benefit tournament will be held for Iris White on September 3 at 12 pm. Iris is our long-time cook (and face of the famous LOGC cheeseburger) who contracted breast cancer earlier this year. She has faced a long road of surgery, chemotherapy, and, now, radiation that has rendered her unable to work. All proceeds from the tournament will go towards her medical bills and personal expenses.
If there were ever a worthy cause, this is it. Iris is like a second mother to me. She fed me, scolded me, laughed with me, and taught me how to be a good person while growing up out here. I actually wish there was more we could do, but this is a good start. I would love to see all of our current AND former members out to show her just how much we care about her.
Call out to the Golf Shop for more information.

Joel Richardson wins Club Championship

MC golfer Joel Richardson won the 2009 LOGC Men's Stroke Play Championship yesterday with a two-day total of 146. Tom Massey and Dustin Lunceford finished one shot back. Congratulations to all the flight winners, and thanks to all for playing.

In other tournament notes, Roosevelt's Revenge is back on the calendar in it's traditional New Year's Day slot. We are also looking into having our fall tournament October 31 - November 1 and going back to our Match Play 4-Ball format. Stay tuned for updates!

Massey leads Club Championship

Tom Massey fired a 70 yesterday. 2 birdies, no bogeys. Yes, no bogeys. I'm as shocked as you.
Massey's a pretty good player. But no bogeys!?!

Good showing by a number of people in round 1. Terry Blalock was 1 under standing on #16 tee. His 74 finish was still his career round in the tournament. Joe Perkins, Tim Shaw, Frank Cline, and Dustin Lunceford all played good Saturday.

On the flip side, there were some disappointments. Doug Hutton, Jon Johnson, Les Carter, and Marty Mays all had less than stellar rounds. A lot of that was inconsistencies. Poor Marty had two 8s and a 7 on his card.

Oh, and yours truly was the largest underacheiver of the day. If I couldn't chip and putt, I might not break 100. Brief synopsis of my round. I knock it in the ditch on 1 and make a good bogey. All pars until a 3-putt on 8 and a birdie on 9. One over at the turn. "Not bad," I thought. Bogeys on 10, 11, 13, & 14 suddenly had me thinking, "Just break 80!" Eagle on 15 and burn the edge for birdie on 16. Then disaster strikes. Bad club selection on 17 plus 3-putt plus three wood in the ditch on 18 = double bogey, double bogey finish. Ouch!!

Hope everyone plays good today!!

New website a go!!

Live Oaks new website is finally up and running. It's a lot better than our old one for a number of reasons. First of all, it has a calendar that you can search for up to a year. (Not that I'll have all of the info in there a year in advance, but you know what I mean.) There is a link to this Blog. There is news. There are photos. And there is also some back end stuff that makes my life much easier!!
The mass email system is not quite ready, but when it is, you'll be receiving a lot more information from the Club.

Hope you enjoy!!

Good Morning!!

The 2nd round has begun, and it is a beautiful day at the John F. Stahl Memorial 4-Ball.

We'll be having BBQ pork sandwiches for lunch today, catered by Ken Crotwell and his Foodie's staff. Ken will also be cooking tonight's steak dinner beginning at 6:30. Additional dinner tickets can be purchased at the front counter.

Calcutta starts around 7 pm depending on the afternoon group finishing.

See you soon!!

The more things change...

Brian Haley and Charlie Keeton continued their torrid run through the Stahl by firing a 7 under 65 in the first round. Going back to last year, that is their 3rd straight 65 and puts them 30 under for their last four rounds.

But they are not alone.

2006 champs Monty Hilton and Mike Stringer matched the defending champs pace. Denny Howell & Steve McKay and Mike & Michael Gregory are one shot back.

Hope y'all had a good time today. Breakfast starts at 7:30. Pulled pork sandwiches for lunch. Dinner starts about 6:30. Calcutta at 7.

BTW, there were NO scats out today, so everything depends on tomorrow.

Round 2 pairings now available

Pairing for the 2nd round of the John F. Stahl Memorial 4-Ball are now available here.

Leaderboard Update

Top scores from this morning's wave:

Robert Pope / Steve Pope 69
Lampton Thomas / Jay Sanders 69
Keith West / Wayne Whitley 71
Trey Holder / Al Holder 72
Lance Ringler / Lannie Staten 73

Scores are kinda high. Hmmm......

Leaderboard Update

Early first round scores:

Pope/Pope -2 8
Lindigrin/Johnson -2 8
Childress/Abraham -1 5
Thomas/Sanders -1 5

And they're off!!

The 2009 John F. Stahl Memorial 4-Ball is officially underway. The weather is a little cool, but the sun just came out. Looks like a Chamber of Commerce kinda day.

Got some good video of the 1st tee. Should provide some laughs later on.

We're ready...

ARE YOU?!?!?

Twas the night before the Stahl...

Darkness has set in, and the next available light means the start of the 2009 John F. Stahl Memorial 4-Ball. Hope everyone is ready for a big weekend.

We had a lot of rain here today. Hopefully, we won't get any overnight and we can set the course up properly. Some of our last day prep was interrupted, so we may look a little rough around the edges, but I don't think anyone will be disappointed with the golf course. Kudos to Superintendent Peter Vincent for a job well done. Shake his hand (or buy him a beer) if you see him.
Tourney notes:
  • We are playing up in the fairway one scorecard length. All other USGA rules apply (including 14 clubs!!).
  • Breakfast starts at 7 instead of 6:30 due to the later starting time.
  • Even if you have pre-paid, please stop by the registration table in the morning to pick up your goody bag.

Rest well, and I'll see you all in the morning!!!

Weather update

It's raining.

Thank goodness it's only Thursday.

The weather forecast is perfect for the weekend though. Check it out here.

Calcutta Darkhorse??

Just got through playing seven holes with this guy:

Suffice it to say I was 5 down.

Who is he?

He is Corey Mays, LOGC Club Champion 2007.

He's playing with John Oxley, and you'll be seeing their names on the front page of the leaderboard all weekend. I'm not predicting a victory for this newcomer, but...

Website Up and Running

Finally got the website up and running. Our newly redesigned website is in the final stages of coming together, and I thought it would be ready by this week. Alas, I'll have to wait a few more days. I did, however, get the Stahl site running here. Results from last year are there, too.

Friday tee times now available

Tee times for the first round of the John F. Stahl Memorial 4-Ball are now available here.

Of Fairways and eMail

We finally got our new fairway mower today. Don't ever let anyone tell you that mowing fairways with a zero turn is a good idea. I appreciate everyone's patience, and after looking at #1, it did 'em some good to thicken up a little.

Here's a look:

I may have given some false information about following the blog. To get email alerts of new posts, subscribe to the feed at the bottom of the page. Sorry, it's a new system and I'm getting used to it myself.

The Field

Here is a list of teams that are currently signed up.

Field tidbits:
  • There are 3 former Stahl Champion teams in the field: Monty Hilton / Mike Stringer (2006), Brian Haley / Charlie Keeton (2008), and 3-time champs Michael Slack / Ken Peacock (2003, 2004, 2007).
  • There are also 3 players that won with different partners than their 2009 partner including Michael Slack who won in 1994 with Bob Smith. Steve McKay won in 2000 with Robert Donald, and John Fountain pulled off the trifecta, winning with 3 different partners: 1995 with Arthur Noble, 1999 with Bob Travis, and 2005 with David Sellers.
  • There are 5 former LOGC Club Champions in the field: John Fountain (1977, 1988), Jim Henderson (1976, 1981), Steve Pope (1986), Steve McKay (1992), and Corey Mays (2007). There is also a former Club Champion RUNNING the tournament: ME (2004)!!

So who do you think is gonna win?? I have my eye on a few teams, but I won't divulge those until later in the week. Just remember, Haley/Keeton set a record for score AND margin of victory last year.

"Stahl, anyone??"

Finally.

Stahl week is upon us.

Oh, and welcome to the new blog home of the John F. Stahl Memorial 4-Ball and Live Oaks Golf Club. Sorry our new website isn't up yet. It's almost done. Hopefully, it will be up Monday or Tuesday.

Now for tourney news. Currently, we have 96 teams signed up. We have shut down registration, and are working on building a waiting list. If enough people sign up on the waiting list, I'll probably open a new flight. But for now, 96 is the number.

I have been working on Friday tee times this afternoon, and should publish them tomorrow. Click the "Follow" link on the left side of this page to receive email alerts because I'll publish the link here first.
